Travel PT 101: A New Grad’s Guide to Adventure and Growth

Happy Physical Therapy Month to all the amazing PTs and PTAs out there, especially those just starting their career adventure! Whether you’re fresh out of school or ready to switch things up, there’s never been a better time to hit the road and see where your skills can take you.

You’ve probably heard about travel PT assignments—working in new places, meeting awesome people, and learning from different healthcare settings. But how do you even get started? Well, buckle up, bestie, because I’ve got you covered with the deets to make your first step into the travel PT world totally doable.

  1. Why Travel? Adventure + Growth = Dream Combo

Think of travel assignments as the perfect blend of personal and professional growth. You’ll see new cities, meet tons of new faces, and get a crash course in being flexible and adaptable (hello, life skills!). Plus, you’ll boost your resume big time by gaining experience in different healthcare settings—talk about leveling up!

  1. Don’t Stress the License Process – We’ve Got You

Before you start packing, make sure your state licenses are in order. But don’t worry—there’s a super helpful resource that everyone should know about: the PT Compact. It lets you practice in multiple states without having to go through all the paperwork again and again. 🎉 This is such a lifesaver for travelers, especially if you’re eager to jump from one state to another.

Pro tip: Check if your home state participates, and you’ll be golden for getting those assignments faster.

  1. New Grad? No Problem! Here’s How to Prep

If you’re a new grad, first of all, congrats!! 🥳 We know it feels like there’s so much to learn, but starting out in travel PT can be a fantastic way to build your confidence quickly.

Here are a few things you can do to set yourself up for success:

  • Find a Supportive Recruiter: Look for one who’s worked with new grads before. They can help you find a travel assignment where you’ll get great mentorship while still having fun exploring new places.
  • Stay Organized: Keep a folder (digital or old-school binder—whatever floats your boat!) with all your certifications, licenses, and job contracts. You’ll thank yourself later!
  • Continuing Education: CrossMed offers free or discounted CEUs (Continuing Education Units). That means you can keep your certifications up-to-date while on the go! Score! 🎯

  1. Housing Hacks for Travelers

Finding a place to live can feel like a big deal, but there are SO many options out there for travelers. Whether you want to rent a short-term apartment, crash at a long-stay hotel, or even live the RV life, the flexibility is all part of the fun!

Check out some of these resources:

  • Furnished Finder: Perfect for short-term rentals with options close to hospitals and clinics.
  • Airbnb: Yes, even this trusty fave can be a great option—just make sure to negotiate a longer stay discount.
  • RV Life: If you’re feeling extra adventurous, many travel PTs swear by this. It’s you and the open road!
  1. Celebrate PT Month with Confidence

As we celebrate PT Month, it’s also a reminder to celebrate YOU. Stepping into the world of travel therapy is an exciting, bold move, and it’s going to challenge and reward you in ways you never imagined. Take time this month to reflect on how far you’ve come and how many lives you’re about to impact as you travel the country, healing and helping people live their best lives.

So, What Are You Waiting For? Let’s Get Started!

Ready to take the leap? Whether you’re a new grad or just looking to shake things up, traveling as a PT or PTA is an amazing way to see the world, build your career, and grow as a person. It’s PT Month—so what better time to celebrate by starting your next big adventure?
