How to Get Licensed Faster: Compact States and Licensure Tips

For travel nurses, licensure can either be your launchpad—or your roadblock. Whether you’re just starting your travel career or planning your next assignment, staying ahead of license requirements is essential.

Luckily, if you’re working with a savvy recruiter and live in the right state, you may already be ahead of the game. Here’s what you need to know about Compact States, how they work in 2025, and how you can use them to start your next assignment faster.

What Is the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC)?

The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) allows registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPNs/VNs) to hold one multistate license that gives them the ability to practice in all participating states—without applying for a new license in each one. As of 2025, 40+ states and territories are part of the NLC, and more are pending legislation.

Why Compact Licenses Are a Game-Changer

Speed matters in staffing. Facilities are increasingly making quick hiring decisions—and having your license ready means you’re not waiting on red tape. A compact license helps you:

  • Get submitted for jobs faster
  • Start assignments with less downtime
  • Qualify for more high-demand opportunities in top states

How to Get a Compact License

You’re eligible for a multistate license if:

  1. Your primary legal residence is in a compact state
  1. You meet the NLC’s uniform licensure requirements
  1. You apply through your state’s Board of Nursing

Uniform requirements include:

  • Graduation from an approved nursing program
  • Passing the NCLEX
  • Criminal background checks
  • Active, unencumbered license

Not a Nurse? You’ve Got Options Too

If you’re a PT, OT, or SLP, there are compacts for you too:

Each compact varies slightly, but the same principle applies: multistate mobility with a single license.

Tips to Speed Up the Licensure Process

  • Apply early – don’t wait until you’re submitted for a job
  • Set up alerts for expiring licenses or documents
  • Work with a recruiter who understands state-by-state requirements
  • Keep digital copies of every credential and CEU
