First-Time Travel Assignment Checklist: What to Know Before Day One

You’re preparing to work at a new facility, meet a new team, learn new processes, and temporarily move your life somewhere new. Even the exciting parts can start to feel overwhelming when your brain is trying to remember 47 things at once.

The good news? You don’t have to figure everything out at the last minute. A little preparation can make your transition smoother and help you arrive feeling ready for what’s ahead.

Here’s your first-time travel assignment checklist to help you prepare before day one.

1. Get Your Paperwork & Credentials Ready

Before you start thinking about what goes in your suitcase, make sure the important paperwork is taken care of. Credentialing requirements can vary by facility and state, so stay in communication with your recruiter and compliance team throughout the onboarding process.

Double-check that you have a valid state or compact license, your required certifications such as BLS or ACLS, and that all onboarding paperwork has been completed. Keep digital copies of important documents somewhere you can easily access them while traveling.

2. Confirm Your Housing & Logistics

Once your assignment is official, start getting familiar with your temporary home.

Confirm your housing address, lease details, utilities, move-in instructions, and anything you’ll need when you arrive. Then map out your commute to the facility before your first day.

Don’t forget to look into parking, employee entrances, public transportation, traffic patterns, and commute times. Knowing exactly where you’re going on that first morning can eliminate one unnecessary source of stress.

3. Understand Your Pay & Benefits

Before your assignment begins, make sure you understand the financial details.

Confirm that your direct deposit is set up, know your pay schedule, and review when your benefits and insurance coverage begin, if applicable. It’s also a good idea to understand how you’ll submit timecards and who to contact if you ever have a payroll question.

Knowing these details ahead of time means fewer surprises once you’re on assignment.

4. Prepare for Your New Facility

Every facility and unit has its own routines, expectations, and culture. Spend a little time researching your new workplace before you arrive.

Review the facility location and your unit or department, and make note of any first-day instructions you’ve received. If you know other travelers who have worked there, ask about their experience.

You don’t need to know everything before you walk through the doors. The goal is simply to arrive informed, prepared, and ready to learn.

5. Pack for Your Assignment—Not Just Your Trip

Packing for a travel assignment is different from packing for vacation. You’re temporarily creating a home somewhere else, so think beyond clothes and toiletries.

Along with your work essentials, consider what will make your new space feel comfortable. Bring a few favorite things from home, but resist the urge to pack everything you own. Check what your housing already provides before buying or packing household items.

And remember: unless you’re headed somewhere extremely remote, there’s probably a Target nearby for whatever you forgot.

6. Prepare Mentally, Too

The logistical checklist matters, but so does preparing yourself for the experience.

Starting somewhere new can feel intimidating—even for experienced healthcare professionals. Give yourself time to adjust. Research the area, connect with other travelers, and set a few goals for your assignment.

Maybe you want to gain experience in a new specialty, build your resume, explore a new city, meet new people, or simply challenge yourself professionally.

Your first assignment doesn’t have to feel completely comfortable on day one. That’s part of the adventure.
